Each year, between July and August, the dry plains of Minneriya come alive as hundreds of Sri Lankan elephants converge around the ancient reservoir in a breathtaking natural event known as “The Gathering.” Here, you’ll witness up to 300 elephants in one place, families, playful calves, and majestic tuskers creating a rare and powerful wildlife encounter found nowhere else in the world.

But this journey is more than just a safari.

From the wild, we travel into history at the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, where centuries-old ruins, sacred temples, and intricate stone carvings tell the story of a remarkable civilization. Walk among the remains of royal palaces and serene Buddha statues as the past comes vividly to life. As you explore its well-preserved ruins, you will encounter troops of Toque Macaques that inhabit the area. These fascinating primates gained international recognition through the BBC documentary Temple Troop and David Attenborough’s Life of Mammals. Observing their behavior in this historic setting offers a unique and memorable wildlife experience.

Your journey then continues into the cultural heart of Sri Lanka, Kandy. Nestled among lush hills, this vibrant city becomes even more magical during this time of year as it hosts the world-famous Esala Perahera. This grand cultural festival features a spectacular procession of dancers, drummers, fire performers, and beautifully adorned elephants parading through the streets in a dazzling celebration of tradition and spirituality.
